Humility: A Guide to Serving Others

Understanding Humility
Life in my 20s was filled with spontaneous adventures and fun times. The world was alive, and I was in the center of it. Fast forward twenty-plus years, and I find myself humbled by the dark times I had to face. Being humble can sometimes feel like weakness. However, true strength lies in humility. It allows us to understand our place in the world and inspires genuine connections with others. In the Bible, Proverbs 22:4 states, “True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.” This verse emphasizes that humility isn't just about lowering ourselves; it’s about recognizing the importance of others and valuing our relationships.
Simple Ways to be Humble
How can we incorporate humility into our daily lives?
Practice Active Listening: Instead of thinking about your response while others are speaking, focus entirely on what they are saying. This shows respect and values their opinions.
Serve Others: Find opportunities to help those in need. Whether it’s volunteering at a local shelter or simply helping a neighbor, serving others strengthens humility.
Accept Feedback: Learn to embrace constructive criticism. Instead of taking it personally, recognize it as an opportunity for growth.
Practice Gratitude: Regularly take time to reflect on what you are thankful for. This practice can help you acknowledge the many influences outside of yourself that contribute to your happiness and success.
These small adjustments in our daily lives can lead to profound changes in our character. Let us remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 23:12: “And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” This reassures us that in serving others and being humble, we are on the right path.
Take time to step away from self-centered thinking and consider the needs of those around you. Another beautiful reminder is found in James 4:10, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” This illustrates that humility is not just about our interactions with people, but it also positions us favorably in our relationship with God.
Thank you, and may God Bless You Always!

Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself — it’s thinking of yourself less.
True humility is not weakness — it’s wisdom clothed in gentleness.
